McConnell Plans Freestanding Bill for Border Humanitarian Crisis Funds

Mitch McConnell Responds to Jon Stewart Dig: ‘I Don’t Know Why He’s Bent Out of Shape’

The emergency border funding request contains no money for the wall or for border security, but merely requests resources for overburdened federal immigration officials and departments to better deal with "the immediate humanitarian crisis", as one administration official put it, precipitated by the surge of people claiming asylum at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Asked about Stewart's criticism, McConnell argued Monday that "many things in Congress happen at the last minute".

"I'm going to bring it up freestanding next week and see if they really aren't interested in dealing with this mass of humanity that we have to take care of at the border", the majority leader said in an interview with Fox News, referencing Democrats' opposition to funding for President Trump's border wall.

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee voted unanimously in favor of extending the fund, which is now set to stop taking claims in December 2020. "I don't know why he's all bent out of shape, but we will take care of the 9/11 Victims' Compensation Fund".

A day after his testimony, the House Judiciary Committee unanimously voted to permanently reauthorize the fund, which is part of the larger James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. "It sounds to me like he is looking for some way to take offense".

Stewart also said that seven first responders had died in the past week.

The bill is expected to easily pass the Democrat-controlled House and will then head to the Senate for a vote.

McConnell concluded by insisting the bill would be funded again.

Stewart has been campaigning for the funds for years, and in 2010 devoted an entire episode of "The Daily Show" to it.

A number of Republicans in the Senate stood with Trump's decision to threaten Mexico with tariffs after several party members spoke out against it. McConnell said last week "there is not much support" in his "conference for tariffs" and that he hoped tariffs would not be implemented. He called McConnell "an enormous obstacle, unwilling to move the bill forward for purely political reasons".
