"This is the greatest number of cases reported in the US since 1992 and since measles was declared eliminated in 2000, "the CDC says".

Multiple outbreaks in recent months appear tied to worldwide travelers who got measles overseas - in countries like Israel, Ukraine, and the Philippines - and saw their infections spread among clusters of unvaccinated people in the U.S. The New York outbreaks have been concentrated largely among Orthodox Jewish communities.

Measles symptoms include runny nose, red eyes, a cough, high fever and the tell-tale rash.

"In most cases, people are unaware they need the second vaccine, or they simply don't remember if they have had one or two", Dr Gibney said.

Measles is nearly entirely preventable through two doses of the MMR vaccine.

Dr Maria Poynter of the Auckland Regional Public Health Service advises what to do if you suspect you may have contracted measles.

Many global destinations are also experiencing measles outbreaks.

"Our message is to make sure that everyone has two doses", she said.

Children having B4School Checks were also being offered MMR if they were not up to date, she said.

Currently, accredited pharmacists in NSW, the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria can administer adult MMR boosters, in most cases including to children aged 16 and over.

"As at 5 April 2019, there had been 83 measles notifications in 2019, compared with 103 for the whole of 2018 and 81 for the whole of 2017".
