He revealed the news on Facebook and reports he's already begun treatment.

Mustaine's statement reads: "I've been diagnosed with throat cancer". ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Unfortunately, this requires that we cancel most shows this year.

But Megadeth will hit the high seas with their 2019 Megacruise in October, and Mustaine has announced the band will "be a part of it in some form", adding, "Megadeth will be back on the road ASAP".

Members of the metal community took to Twitter to send Dave their well wishes, with thrash metal band Overkill writing: "Sending positive vibes to @DaveMustaine who has just been diagnosed with throat cancer".

Megadeth has released 15 records, starting with 1985's "Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!"

The Megadeth frontman took to the band's official blog to share more about his diagnosis on Monday.

Mustaine said he and his bandmates, Ellefson, Kiko Loureiro and Kirk Verbeuren, are working on a new album, the followup to 2016's Dystopia.

The American Cancer Society reports that approximately 53,000 diagnoses of "oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer" are given each year, and of those cases, almost a fifth prove to be fatal.

Mustaine, the original lead guitarist of Metallica, concluded his message: "I'm so thankful for my whole team - family, doctors, band members, trainers, and more".

Prior to joining Megadeth, Mustaine was in the band Panic.

Mustaine founded Megadeath in 1984 after being ousted from Metallica in 1983. "See you soon, Dave Mustaine". "I'll keep everyone posted", he promised.
