Built in 1925, the colossal arena has hosted four European Cup finals, as well as six matches during the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

La Repubblica last week reported Milan and Inter wanted to submit a planning application for a new stadium before the 2022-23 season next week.

The iconic San Siro stadium will be getting demolished and replaced with a new modernised ground that will be shared by both Inter and AC Milan.

"The old one will be demolished and there will be new constructions in its place".

Gazzetta dello Sport write that, although they were initially hesitant about the idea, the Inter board have been convinced by their counterparts that the construction of a state-of-the-art venue is in both parties' best interests. "We will build a new San Siro next to the old one on the same area of land".

Despite its status in world football, San Siro has always been regarded as in need of refurbishment, but the two Milan clubs are planning to rebuild it completely instead.

Should Canada be doing more to stand up to China?
The two Canadians have been languishing behind bars in China since shortly after Canada arrested high-tech executive Meng Wanzhou late a year ago at the behest of USA authorities.

Scaroni was speaking in Lausanne, Switzerland, ahead of the Olympic Committee's selection of the hosts for the 2026 Winter Olympics on Monday.

Scaroni further said that: "It's an extremely complicated process", Scaroni added.

However, Inter have now come on board with the plans for a new ground, that will be constructed on the vehicle parks adjacent to the present San Siro.

San Siro was was officially opened in 1926, and the facility was launched by AC Milan, while Inter joined them on the ground 19 years later.

The project will cost around €700m, with both clubs hoping to move in at the beginning of the 2022/23 season.

It remains to be seen how Sala and the rest of the council will react to such a proposal. Hopefully it'll arrive before the holidays.
