MLB Rumors: Yankees Set To Acquire Edwin Encarnacion From Mariners

NY certainly added some right-handed power in the acquisition.

Encarnacion, 36, has hit no less than 34 home runs in a season since 2012 and now leads the American League with 21 dingers in 2019.

This is the second big deal the Yankees have pulled off with the Mariners in 2019 as Seattle traded starting pitcher James Paxton to ny this offseason.

The New York Post's Joel Sherman reports that Yankees pitching prospect Juan Then is heading to Seattle in exchange for Encarnacion.

Encarnacion had been sidelined recently with a lower back issue, though that may have been the Mariners being extra cautious as they pursued trade options. The right-hander now ranks no. 27 in the Yankees' system and made his last pro ball appearance for New York's rookie-level affiliate in 2018, pitching to a 2.70 ERA, 2.0 BB/9, and 7.6 SO/9 across 50 innings.

The move may leave many fans scratching their heads in the short term, as the Yankees are set to add both Stanton and Judge to their potent lineup as early as Tuesday. They also added Kendrys Morales in a trade with Oakland, though he is on the injured list because of his calf.
