Iranian also reportedly sought a "correction" on Britain's stance.

Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said London had concluded Iran was "almost certainly" responsible for Thursday's tanker attacks.

The suspected attacks occurred at dawn Thursday about 40 kilometres off the southern coast of Iran.

Another tanker caught in the blaze was owned by Oslo-listed company Frontline.

The ship is "heading toward the Fujairah-Khor Fakkan area in the United Arab Emirates" and was being sprayed with water to cool the hull, the head of ports for the Iranian province of Hormozgan told the semi-official news agency ISNA.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pat Shanahan said the U.S. was trying to build "international consensus" in the Middle East after the attacks.

"We also need to broaden our support for this worldwide situation", he told reporters on Friday.

The Japanese owner of the Kokuka Courageous said Friday, June 14, 2019, that the vessel, one of two oil tankers targeted in an apparent attack in the Gulf of Oman, would be brought to the Emirati port of Khorfakkan.

The United States and Saudi Arabia have directly blamed Iran for the attacks on the six vessels.

Limpet mines were spotted on one of the ships, leading the U.S.to conclude that Iran was behind the attack.

In a Parliament session on Sunday, Speaker Ali Larijani said the Thursday oil tankers incident in the Sea of Oman has all the markings of being carried out by the U.S. after the country failed to achieve any results with their economic sanctions on Iran. They and the mariners declined to take questions.

In recent weeks, the US has sent an aircraft carrier strike group and other military assets to the region in what it says is aimed at Iranian deterrence.

The crew, who remained on board, were "safe and well", it said.

The other tanker hit, the Kokuka Courageous, was being towed toward the United Arab Emirates' port of Kalba, its operator said on Friday.

Abe arrived in Tehran on Wednesday and became the first Japanese leader to visit Iran in more than 4 decades. It was the second attack in a month in the strategic shipping lane.

The act allows a USA president to control the "export of defense articles and services".

The prince reiterated longstanding Saudi accusations against rival Iran of using militias to destabilize the region.

Pope Francis said Sunday he was following "with concern" the growing tensions in the Gulf.

"We do not want a war in the region".

The UN has called for an independent investigation. "The world can not afford a major confrontation in the Gulf", he said.

The head of the world's largest worldwide shipping association says as a result of the attacks some companies have already ordered their ships not to enter the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.

A third of the world's seaborne oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow channel bordered to the north by Iran that links the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
