More evidence that Trump's tariff battle with Mexico made a difference

The Washington Post reported on Monday that "the number of migrant families crossing the border illegally has been falling in recent weeks, according to preliminary figures from U.S. Customs and Border Protection". "That number has declined about 13 percent since the beginning of June, a period during which Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico and the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador agreed to an immigration crackdown to avoid the penalty".

"President Donald Trump announces that the expelling of illegal migrants from the United States will begin next week".

Mexico is planning to deploy thousands of troops to its southern border amid heightened pressure from the Trump administration to crack down on the Central American migrant crisis. Trump, a Republican, has made reducing illegal immigration one of the main policies of his presidency.

"The deployment of the National Guard will be completed this week, with support from the Ministry of Defense and the Navy", Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said at a news conference.

Markets jump as Draghi hints at more eurozone stimulus
Another measure is "quantitative easing" (QE), which sees European Central Bank buying government and corporate debt. Draghi warned that trade disputes were among factors affecting growth in his speech advocating potential stimulus.

Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) said in a statement late on Saturday that 791 foreign nationals were found in four trucks stopped in the eastern state of Veracruz, confirming earlier reports about a mass detention.

"We are calling this a rescue because the containers were not designed for human transport".

Veracruz is one of the most violent regions of Mexico.

Most of those caught attempting to enter the United States are people fleeing poverty and violence in three troubled Central American nations, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Some say it would be better to stay in Mexico than return home if Trump clamps down further on migration into the United States. The portion of migrants arriving as part of a family group has reached unprecedented levels in recent months, overwhelming USA border authorities who say they are ill-equipped to care for so many parents with children.
