NASA Unveils 'Hidden Figures Way' at Headquarters to Honor Female Space Icons

Ted Cruz, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and Margot Lee Shetterly, author of the book Hidden Figures, unveil the Hidden Figures Way street sign at a dedication ceremony on Wednesday in Washington.

A photo taken outside NASA Headquarters in Washington shows the street sign of what was formerly E Street SW but was renamed Hidden Figures Way.

The trio's work was largely forgotten until they were profiled in the book "Hidden Figures" decades later by author Margot Lee Shetterly, later adapted into the 2016 blockbuster of the same name.

Philippine official seeks strong protest over boat sinking
The country claims Reed Bank as part of the province of Palawan, as it is only 85 nautical miles away from Philippine shores. The defense chief called for a formal investigation into the incident and requested diplomatic action against China.

Last year, Sens. Ted Cruz, Ed Markey, John Thune and Bill Nelson introduced a bill to rename the street to honor the "human computers" at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, which eventually became NASA. And Dorothy Vaughan led a segregated computing unit for almost a decade.

Shetterly said the decision to ordain Hidden Figures Way honored "the contributions of unseen individuals who were there at the beginning of the story, and whose persistence and courage have delivered us to where we are today".

NASA honored the three "hidden figures" who helped pave the way for the first American astronaut to successfully orbit the Earth by renaming the street in front of NASA's Washington headquarters Hidden Figures Way.

NASA announced in May that it plans to land Americans back on the moon by 2024 with the Artemis initiative, named after Apollo's twin sister who was goddess of the hunt and the moon.

Cruz said that he hopes the street's new name will "inspire generations after generations of kids, and particularly little girls, who may be told in school, 'You can't do something'".
