A newborn baby boy who was abandoned inside a California dumpster is now receiving medical treatment while his mother, a 15-year-old girl, has also been hospitalized. The infant was immediately taken to the hospital.

"[She] is still in the hospital being treated but will be cited for felony child abuse/endangerment and will be released to her parents", SPD confirmed.

A baby boy was discovered alive Tuesday after he was abandoned in a dumpster near a Stockton apartment complex, authorities said.

Police found the baby's 15-year-old mother nearby and she was taken to a hospital.

Two people found the boy wrapped in a blanket inside a plastic bag Tuesday afternoon in Stockton, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Sacramento.

It's unclear how long the child was in the dumpster.

The baby was taken to Valley Children's Hospital for treatment and is doing well, according to the CHP statement. They didn't recognize her as one of their renters.

No one answered at the unit where the mother was found and no one living nearby was able to tell FOX40 who lived there.

"We're still trying to figure out exactly her connection to that apartment complex", Silva said.

Silva called the resident and the building manager who found the boy heroes and said they probably prevented the newborn's death.

Stockton Police Department confirmed the disturbing discovery on their Facebook page Tuesday and also revealed that the young mother, only identified as a teen, will be cited for child abuse/endangerment as they continue to investigate. "When officers arrived, they met with a citizen who told officers he thought he saw a baby wrapped up inside the dumpster".

Cooper was unable to get into the dumpster so he called on-site manager John Pedebone. "So, I just make sure that he's breathing and warm", Pedebone said. Pedebone says he picked up the boy, who was still breathing and alive.

"Hopefully", he said, "everything will be fine".
