New Jersey mom allegedly beaten unconscious by teen who told her son ‘to go back to Mexico

"We send our kids to school with the intention they will be safe", said the family's attorney, Daniel Santiago.

Beronica Ruiz, 35, of Passaic, was brutally attacked after she complained to the school's vice principal about three students who threatened her son and told him to 'go back to Mexico,' the woman's attorney said Friday. Three boys trailed behind - and he recognized them.

"He say, 'Mom, the kids follow us", she said. When the 35-year-old mother tried to step in, the teen hit her and "threw her to the ground", causing her to lose consciousness, Santiago said.

Beronica Ruiz was beaten by the schoolboy who had bullied her son in what appears to have been a racially motivated attack.

"Despite this accusation, the juvenile is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt", Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said in a statement.

However, Ruiz and her family believe the attack was a hate crime. Passaic Mayor Hector Lora confirmed his arrest Tuesday in a statement, which said the boy had also been suspended from school.

'This incident is being taken extremely seriously.

"As both a father and a husband I am outraged over this incident". "I have met with my chief of police, local officials and school administration, as well as board members to make sure there is accountability and that this family receives justice as well as any help and resources we can provide".

Protesters urge discussion of Hong Kong issues at G-20
The events have embarrassed the central government in Beijing, which continues to back Lam's administration. Protesters have since called for the legislation's complete withdrawal and for Lam to resign.

The attorney said he plans to file suit against the school on behalf of the family, saying "lawsuits are the only thing that large institutions listen to".

The attack stemmed from an argument on June 18 in the lunchroom at Passaic Gifted and Talented Academy Public School No. 20. "Santiago stated the school did not immediately discipline the attacker either, instead told the mother that the attacker had just as much right to an education as her son".

The 13-year-old suspect is African American, Santiago said.

The Ruiz family said the school did not notify them of the incident.

"I told the guy, 'Stop, don't bother my son, '" she told ABC7. "The teacher grabbed the attention of a security guard, and they essentially sequestered my client's son in a room for his own safety". Ruiz and her husband are legally in the country on work visas, Santiago told the North Jersey Record, and their son is a US citizen, according to WNBC.

During the meeting with the school's vice principal, the administrator admitted fault, telling the parents that "it slipped his mind" and "he should have contacted them", Santiago claimed.

"She had a concussion, she had fractures in her face", says Santiago. A spokesman for the school district said they can't comment on student matters.

While walking home from school, the bully allegedly told the 12-year-old boy to "go back to Mexico" and then attacked the mom who was pushing a stroller, knocking her unconscious.
