Morgan hit 17 sixes in his career-best 148, with England's total of 25 sixes also a new world record.

No fewer than 17 sixes, a century of runs in their own right, flew effortlessly from the blade of a relatively slight figure compared to so numerous modern-day power-hitters.

Eoin Morgan set the tone for England's record sixathon when he slogged a free hit for six and followed it up by clearing the boundary over long-on off the very next delivery from his opposing captain Gulbadin Naib.

Eoin Morgan rewrote the record books, clobbering 17 sixes - the most in a one-day global innings - in a blistering century as England crushed Afghanistan by 150 runs in a World Cup match at Old Trafford.

Jonny Bairstow smashed 90 and Joe Root made 88, but it was Morgan's breathtaking six-hitting display that turned the match into a statistician's delight. Take walking out of the equation and deal nearly exclusively in boundaries instead.

Morgan himself had an early stroke of luck when he was dropped on 28 by Dawlat Zadran in the deep.

Afghanistan's star leg-spinner Rashid Khan had one of his worst days on a cricket field. We have seen that somewhere before.

Jofra Archer (3-52) and Adil Rashid (3-66) were the most prolific bowlers for England, whose fourth win in five moved them above Australia at the summit on net run-rate and condemned bottom-placed Afghanistan to a fifth straight defeat.
