Pompeo while leaving U.S. called Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates "two great allies in the challenge that Iran presents".

USA officials said they did not know if Pompeo raised the issue with Prince Mohammed.

The crisis gripping the Middle East stems from Trump's withdrawal of the USA a year ago from the nuclear deal with Iran and other world powers and then imposing crippling new sanctions on Tehran.

In response, Trump ordered, then canceled a strike meant to hit a set of radar and missile battery sites in Iran after he was informed that up to 150 people could be killed by the strike.

Trump last week ordered but then cancelled a military strike on Iran, saying the response would not be proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.
