Chinese President Xi Jinping's forthcoming visit to North Korea this week was in the news in Pyongyang Tuesday, but in the country where Kim Jong Un comes first, it only just made the front page.

Chinese officials reportedly said that Xi's visit would mark the 70th anniversary of China and North Korea establishing diplomatic relations and that the two leaders will hold in-depth discussions on ways to develop bilateral relations. In 2009, then-premier Wen Jiabao travelled to Pyongyang for talks with Kim Jong-il.

The sudden announcement of Xi's visit to Pyongyang ahead of his much-speculated meeting with Trump at the G-20 summit in Osaka on June 28-29 led to speculation that he wants to flaunt Beijing's importance in any future deal between U.S. and North Korea over denuclearisation.

"I hope that this visit will contribute to the early resumption of talks on the complete denuclearisation of and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean peninsula", a spokeswoman for South Korean President Moon Jae-in said upon learning of Xi's trip.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Pyongyang later this week, reported the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) Monday.

Trump has accused China of slowing down the denuclearization process with North Korea. Donald Trump tweeted out this morning that a planned meeting at the upcoming G-20 summit next week will become an "extended meeting". He also mentioned the likelihood of another summit with Kim. Not only was it Kim's first visit to China, it was also the first known trip out of the North he had taken since assuming office in 2011.

The US president is expected to visit Seoul after the Osaka summit to discuss the denuclearization issue. "But the trade conflict, which is at its peak, may have led China to plan the trip", Shin said.

Earthquakes at the border can raise alarm due to nuclear tests in North Korea that have caused tremors in China in the past.

Still, the links between the allies are real: More than 90% of North Korea's foreign trade has gone through China, and some experts say Beijing's backing of harsh United Nations sanctions imposed in 2016 and 2017 helped inspire Kim's diplomatic outreach beginning in early 2018.

Since that belated meeting, the two sides seemed to be making up for lost time - Xi and Kim have met four times in the past 15 months. The move was viewed as aimed at strengthening his leverage over Washington and persuading Moscow to loosen its implementation of the worldwide sanctions against North Korea.

The first-ever Chinese president to visit North Korea was Liu Shaoqi in 1963.

Last month, North Korea fired short-range missiles and other weapons into the sea in an apparent effort to apply pressure on the U.S.

Nuclear negotiations with Washington have since stalled, with a second summit in Hanoi breaking up as the two sides disagreed over the extent of sanctions relief and what the North would be willing to give up in return.
