‘Remarkable’ Heatwave Hits Paris, Continental Europe (Photos, Videos)

Europe braces for summer scorcher

France has an "orange" warning in place, the second highest, with temperatures set to rise over 40C.

Water is expected to be delivered to homeless people, and local authorities have set up air-conditioned public places in Paris where residents can escape the heat. That storm is continually pumping heat northward into Europe.

Britain's MetOffice said it was particularly concerned that the heatwave could trigger "violent storms" and warned people to expect "hot, humid and unstable" weather.

Daytime highs could reach 40C in France and Germany - the current June national temperature records are 41.5C in France and 38.C in Germany.

They added that temperatures of 40 degrees would be "regularly reached or exceeded" as the week goes on.

There may be the odd shower leading into Tuesday but in general it will be a warm, sunny and dry day with temperatures continuing to improve; highs of 19 to 23 degrees with northeast breezes.

The sudden spike in temperature could be risky because people are not accustomed to such high temperatures, which could put them at risk of heat-related illnesses, Axios said.

"Should we get tropical temperatures of 35 degrees or more, that would depress the crop yields", farmers' spokesman Joachim Rukwied told DPA news agency, saying grain crops had received just enough rainfall last month and were going through an "important growing phase". Numerous victims were elderly people in apartments and retirement homes without air conditioning.

France was hit with an intense heatwave in 2003 when almost 15,000 people died over a two-week period, majority elderly.

Temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) are forecast in a number of major cities across the continent, with meteorologists warning that higher humidity could make it feel even hotter. Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain are also preparing for oppressive heat.

Dutch officials issued a heat warning in seven of its 12 provinces yesterday.

Rescue services urged people to look out for young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems who are at particular risk in high temperatures.

The weather forecaster wrote on its website: "Even when the most intense heat waves wane, it will be brief and temperatures will remain near or above normal before returning to unsafe levels once again".

In the Balkans, soaring temperatures saw many people flocking to rivers, lakes and swimming pools to cool down last week, although a weekend of stormy weather helped take the edge off the heat. The agency called the weather "exceptional for the end of June".

Climate data suggests heat waves in Europe are becoming more frequent, say scientists.
