Root leads England to crushing win over West Indies

Will Joe Root steer England to victory over the West Indies

England's third win in four matches lifted them to second in the 10-team standings while West Indies are sixth following their second loss.

But if Wood and Archer, again faster than anything West Indies paced-filled attack could muster, took three wickets each then England were grateful for Root's mixture of off-spin and leg-breaks just when West Indies were threatening a half decent total.

Chasing a modest 213 for victory, Root and Jonny Bairstow shared an opening partnership of 95.

Root had already played an unlikely role with the ball, taking two wickets with his occasional off-spin, and the role reversals continued with a Chris Woakes cameo at number three.

But England's celebratory mood in Southampton was punctured by the injury scares for Roy and captain Eoin Morgan.

England, with such a small target, opened with Root rather than Buttler in Roy's absence and he responded by doing what Joe Root does, making everything look easy and reaching his 16th one-day global hundred and second of this World Cup.

With the end in sight, Woakes was dismissed for 40, caught by substitute Fabian Allen off the bowling of Gabriel.

Making matters worse for England, Morgan was the second batsman to hobble off the field in the first innings.

Earlier, England contained the West Indies well but at a cost, with Roy and captain Eoin Morgan limping off the pitch.

Archer then accounted for Pooran - the left-hander given out on review with UltraEdge showing he snicked the ball while looking to leave - Cottrell and Carlos Brathwaite (14), before Wood cleaned up last man Shannon Gabriel (0), West Indies all out in 44 overs.

Roy hurt his left hamstring and Morgan suffered a back spasm, both while fielding.

Expect a high scoring encounter between two teams that bat deep and have had a penchant - especially England - of posting big scores of late.

First they had the pace and variations - and the unexpected bonus of Joe Root popping up at a crucial time with two wickets - to brush West Indies aside for a paltry 212. He drove the next ball down the ground for six just for good measure.

Hope was out two balls later, forcing the West Indies to rally around an 89-run fourth-wicket stand between Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer (39).

Part-timer Root picked up a pair of return catches to remove Hetmyer and Jason Holder (9) and return 2-27, and Archer cleaned up the tailenders.

England eased through their run chase, though Bairstow endured a scary moment when he was smashed on the grille by a delivery from Russell - Bairstow was fit to continue but Russell, who had returned for West Indies after missing Monday's washout against South Africa with a knee issue, had to be helped from the field after falling in his follow through.
