A Russian destroyer nearly collided with an American guided-missile cruiser in the Philippine Sea the U.S. Navy said. Pentagon

It was the first such incident involving warships in the region since September, when the Chinese warship Luoyang manoeuvred close to the USS Decatur, a Navy destroyer, in the South China Sea, an incident the US also labelled unprofessional and unsafe.

"A protest over the worldwide radio frequency was made to the commanders of the American ship who were warned about the unacceptable nature of such actions", the Russians said.

"U.S. Seventh Fleet spokesman Commander Clayton Doss stated, "'While operating in the Philippine Sea, a Russian Destroyer.made an unsafe maneuver against USS Chancellorsville.

The incident reportedly took place on Friday morning in the East China Sea while a detachment of Russia's Pacific Fleet was moving alongside a usa carrier attack group.

The Russian warship had been forced to take emergency action to avoid a collision, Russian news agencies reported.

The near collision comes just three days after a Russian aircraft intercepted a us plane over the Mediterranean Sea in an unprovoked and unsafe "high-speed pass" that endangered the lives of the American crew, USA officials said.

The Russian Pacific Fleet voiced an official protest to the U.S. Navy.

In this latest incident, in open ocean northeast of the Philippines, the Russian military accused the Chancellorsville of making a risky manoeuvre by crossing the path of the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov.

The developments come as the U.S. Navy is set to kick off a series of war games in the Baltic Sea with other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations.

The U.S. Navy rejected the story.

Global maritime law requires ships to maintain a safe distance, normally interpreted as 1,000 yards, when passing another, Schuster added.

The Chancellorsville had just finished a replenishment at sea with the USNS John Ericsson when the Russian destroyer crossed in front of the bows of both ships at a distance of 1,000 yards, according to a narrative provided to ABC News by a USA official. It also requires navies not to interfere with another ship conducting flight operations, he said.

The Chancellorsville, which is homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, is among the Ticonderoga-class of cruisers that perform primarily in a Battle Force role, "capable of supporting carrier battle groups, amphibious forces or operating independently and as flagships of surface action groups", according to the Navy.
