This year's World's Ugliest Dog competition has found a victor, with a scruffy little pooch named Scamp the Tramp taking home the 2019 honours at the annual contest, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California.

Nineteen dogs strutted their stuff at the annual World's Ugliest Dog contest in Petaluma, California, on Friday.

Scamp the Tramp's owner Yvonne Morones of Santa Rosa, California, received US$1,500 (A$2,000, £1,130) for her triumph - and there's no doubt plenty of it will go to a few juicy treats for the small pooch.

Scamp beat out 18 other dogs for the honor.

Publicist Christy Gentry says with a chuckle that the competition is not just about being ugly.

"What we're really doing is we're showcasing dogs that have been rescued and adopted and brought into loving homes", Gentry said.

Most were previously abandoned or rescued from kill shelters in the USA, found abandoned on streets or seized from unscrupulous breeders.

The deployments come after renewed pressure from the Trump administration on Mexico to help slow migration flows northward. The total included a record 89,000 families. "Mexico doing more to protect America than Democrats", Trump Jr. tweeted.

Soon she was headed to NY for national TV appearances. "These are sort of spokesdogs for adoption".

The old saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" was in full effect in the California town of Petaluma on Friday (June 21), with 19 ugly mutts going jowl-to-jowl for the title. At left is Kerry Sanders, one of the judges.

Morones, who also owns four Chihuahuas, said Scamp's name is a homage to her grandmother, who warned her as a child not to talk to the "hobos" and "tramps" on the streets.

Zsa Zsa, an English Bulldog, won in 2018.

It's not the first time Scamp has been in the competition - he came second previous year to Zsa Zsa, who has sadly passed away since.
