Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt has turned down a move to Barcelona, despite the two clubs having an agreement in place for a transfer fee of around 75 million euros.

However, according to Spanish newspaper Marca, De Ligt has rejected the move chance to swap Amsterdam for Catalonia.

The Dutch teenager has caught the attention of Europe's top clubs following a superb campaign in which he helped Ajax to win the domestic league and cup double, and to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Netherlands great Gullit feels his fellow Dutchman should not head to Old Trafford after United missed out on Champions League qualification.

If he's not moving to Barça, De Ligt will have to decide between PSG, Juventus and Bayern Munich, the clubs who are now the best positioned to sign him.

"I don't think it'll be Manchester United, they don't play in the Champions League", Gullit told Omnisport when asked where De Ligt will sign.

This leaves the door wide open for Manchester United to try and pip PSG to his signing, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to rebuild his playing squad by focusing on youth.

"I think he wants to play Champions League".

And, though he is yet to commit his future to a club, Gullit is hopeful the Holland worldwide will make the right decision.

"It's going to be hard, a lot of them maybe have a UEFA ban, so there's a lot that's going on still".
