An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer discharged his gun during the incident and was among those injured, said LAPD Officer Greg Kraft.

The shooting occurred Friday night at a Costco store in Corona, about 50 miles (81 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles. Names of the injured and suspect were not released by Corona police.

Corona police said purses, cellphones and backpacks, were left behind by panicked shoppers.

Shoppers and employees have described terror and chaos as shots rang out inside a busy California warehouse store as a gunman in an argument near the freezer section opened fire - killing one man, wounding two and sparking a stampede. "One subject succumbed to their injuries at the scene and three other subjects, including an off duty officer from another agency, were transported to local hospitals in unknown conditions", Corona Police Public Information Officer Tobias Kouroubacalis wrote in a statement to ABC News.

Lt. Jeff Edwards says the gunman was arguing with someone when he pulled out a gun and killed the man. Police with the city of Los Angeles were also at the store early Saturday for unspecified reasons.

Colis told the paper that she and other shoppers hid in a refrigerated produce room.

Police say the alleged gunman claimed to be injured and was taken to a hospital.

Two people were injured while another was killed.

The Corona Police Department said they were not looking for any outstanding people involved in the shooting and indicated that more facts would be available soon.

Witnesses also told CBS Los Angeles they heard an argument before seven or eight shots rang out in the store.

Authorities said shoppers and employees rushed out of the store's exits once the gunshots were heard, with witnesses reporting over 100 people fleeing the store.

It's unclear whether any of the injured were shot.

Video footage recorded by one shopper showed people hiding behind a meat case as screaming took place in the background, reported NBC LA.
