Should Canada be doing more to stand up to China?

Trump says ready to press Xi over Canadian detainees in Beijing

Today Justin Trudeau went to the White house, and this visit to the United States capital may be a key not only in terms of trade on the North American continent and tense relations of Canada with China, but also for the Prime Minister, who is waiting for the election campaign.

The two Canadians have been languishing behind bars in China since shortly after Canada arrested high-tech executive Meng Wanzhou late a year ago at the behest of USA authorities. Derek Burney is a former ambassador to the US, and he says it's time for Canada to stand up to China. Trudeau said later the two men spent considerable time discussing China, adding he expected Trump and Xi to discuss the matter on the sidelines of a Group of 20 summit in Japan next week.

Trudeau said he and Trump had an "extended conversation" about the situation Canada finds itself in with China, which includes blocking imports of Canadian canola and pork.

"Anything I can do to help Canada I will be doing", Trump said when asked whether he would raise the matter with Xi.

He threatened to abandon the pact that the USMCA is to replace, the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Bill Gates says his biggest mistake was not inventing Android
Even so, he does readily admit to the "greatest mistake ever" during his heyday at Microsoft, and it is a big one. Gates said in the software world, especially for platforms, it is a "winner-take-all" market.

"Let's see what happens, but I really believe that [US House of Representatives Speaker] Nancy Pelosi and the House will approve it, I think the Senate will approve it rapidly", he said.

"Trump knows to be nice or Justin will cry", said another Twitter user about the interaction.

However, House Democrats have identified four areas they want to address before the USMCA is put to a vote: labor, the environment, pharmaceuticals and an enforcement mechanism for the overall deal.

"The day after the election, it would win with tremendous support, but we have an election coming up, but I think Nancy Pelosi's going to do the right thing", he said.

"We recognize, however, that the U.S.is going through its process and we remain alert to potential challenges and opportunities that may come through that process".
