Sichuan Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 12

The toll from a strong 6.0-magnitude quake in southwest China rose to 12 dead and 134 injured on Tuesday as rescuers pulled bodies and survivors from wrecked buildings.

Local authorities made an emergency response by sending 5,000 tents, 10,000 folding beds and 20,000 quilts to the earthquake-hit areas, according to the daily. Sections of other roads were also blocked.

The quakes, roughly 30 minutes apart, hit the southwestern province of Sichuan late on Monday, with shaking felt in key regional cities, such as the provincial capital of Chengdu and the metropolis of Chongqing.

Sichuan Province, which lies atop the Longmenshan fault zone, is often afflicted by tremors.

The body of pilot Dave Ibbotson has not yet been recovered several months later, though he is officially presumed dead. The report said that they had tried several times to speak to Mr Henderson "but he has not issued any comment".

At least 12 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a strong quake which shook the south-western Chinese province of Sichuan.

According to South China Morning Post, the Sichuan Earthquake Administration recorded multiple aftershocks overnight and into the early morning. Rescue personnel and some 300 firefighters were sent to the area to provide aid and shelter to victims.

This was part of early reports from news agencies based out of China.

Cracks appeared in several roads and a major highway connecting Yibin city and Xuyong county was closed, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

At least 13 people are dead and about 200 others are injured.
