Sony Michel missed Patriots minicamp due to knee procedure

Michel is still the heavy favorite to assume the majority of snaps in his second season as starter - especially after he averaged 4.5 yards per carry and rushed for almost 1,000 yards as a rookie - but it will be interesting nonetheless to monitor how the knee procedure affects his performance moving forward.

In three postseason games, he totaled 336 yards on 71 carries (4.7 avg.) and six touchdowns.

Michel did not participate in any of the four practices (one OTA, three minicamp sessions) that were open to the media.

Michel has a history of knee issues dating back to high school. The Georgia product also missed a pair of games last season after he suffered a knee injury against the Bears in October. In addition, they selected Alabama's Damien Harris in the third round of the draft and signed LSU's Nick Brossette as an undrafted rookie. Harris is a player who excels at running between the tackles and making yards after contact. He and Tom Brady were not on the same page in terms of route running and timing, and Michel was almost a non-factor as a pass-catcher.

However, it seems likely that the Patriots will divide the workload between Michel and Harris to reduce wearing each running back down and the possibility of injury.

With Michel missing in minicamp, Bolden and Harris got the lion's share of the carries in the running game drills.

There's good news and bad news when it comes to Patriots tailback Sony Michel and the reason he was absent from the team's mandatory minicamp and voluntary OTAs. His long-term viability is definitely a concern, as it was reported last summer that he may have a "bone-on-bone" condition in his knee.
