Holders the United States began their defence of the women's World Cup trophy in style yesterday as Alex Morgan scored five times in a record-setting 13-0 destruction of hapless Thailand in Group F.

A large American presence in Reims ensured that the match was one of 13 confirmed sell-outs in the competition, Federation Internationale de Football Association revealed on Tuesday as they said that more than a million tickets had now been sold for the tournament.

The last team they will play is Sweden, which has proved itself to be a World Cup contender.

"Every goal matters in this tournament and that's what we were working on".

It looked like the Women's World Cup would produce its second scoreless draw in just as many days, but the Netherlands had other plans.

She said her team is united in a way she has never seen before, and they won't let the expectations get in the way of playing a great game. Just after the 2016 Olympics, the US beat Thailand 9-0 in a friendly. Though it was nearly three years ago, there is a history between the two teams.

Hong, 45, is also a former North Korean player who is in her third Women's World Cup as an assistant referee, while Kim, 39, is in her fourth consecutive Women's World Cup. The toughest of those is Sweden, the country that knocked out the USA in the quarterfinals at the 2016 Olympics.

Sweden are in the same group here in France and they started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Chile in Rennes, but only after a long hold-up because of torrential rain which led to conditions deteriorating.

The Group F match at Roazhon Park was goalless when play was halted in the 72nd minute, with Chile forward Maria Urrutia having earlier been carried off on a stretcher following an awkward fall when going up for a header.

"We really just came into the game really wanting to showcase ourselves", Morgan said after the game. "So it's already friendly fire", the US forward said.

Since becoming a member of the U.S. Women's National Team, she has maintained her status as a consistent impact player for the team in worldwide play.
