Tencent, Xiaomi, Oppo Reportedly Testing Huawei’s HongMeng OS

Reuters reports that the company has filed a trademark for the software in Europe and at least nine countries. "It's not something Huawei wants".

As a result, Huawei is trying to reduce reliance on US-based firms and use more parts from Chinese companies, while at the same time accelerating development of its in-house operating system to replace Android and Windows.

President Donald Trump's administration last month put Huawei on a blacklist that barred it from doing business with USA tech companies such as Alphabet Inc, whose Android OS is used in Huawei's phones. The blacklisting, set to take effect after a 90-day reprieve, would require USA companies to ask the government's permission before doing business with Huawei.

The newspaper said, "Huawei is reportedly intensively testing its proprietary operating system (OS) HongMeng with internet giants and domestic smartphone vendors, and the new system will be launched in the next few months".

We have already seen media reports that consumers in some global markets were beginning to avoid Huawei products in view of concerns related to the reduced Google and Android support.

Huawei's Richard Yu was quoted as saying that the HongMengOS is "prepared to be installed on mobile phones, computers, tablets, TVs, cars, wearables and everything else you can install an OS on".

Once Huawei's OS formally hits the street, there will effectively be two kinds of Android operating system: the genuine version and a Huawei version which will be compatible to all Android apps.

Andrew Williamson, vice president of Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's public affairs and communications, said in an interview that the company will "presumably" trademark Hongmeng, which he said has likely been rolled out to a million devices in China.

Last year, one in every three smartphones sold in China was a Huawei device.

For the initial stages, Huawei is said to focus mainly on the budget smartphone segment with its own OS. While it is still believed that creating a market-ready alternative to Android is near impossible, the report says otherwise.

Furthermore, Huawei claims that, despite its efforts, Federal Commissioners have refused to meet with company representatives in order to explain the accusations of threatening national security, and the Chinese company is "therefore handicapped to respond".
