Throughout the Iraq War, Bellavia also took part in battles in Najaf, Mosul, Baqubah and Muqdadiyah. He received it for his "conspicuous gallantry" during the Second Battle of Fallujah, the bloodiest battle of the Iraq War.

Bellavia is among a group of service members whose valor awards have been upgraded after a review launched by former defense secretary Ash Carter in 2016 of valor awards from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Medal of Honor hangs around the neck of Medal of Honor recipient Army Staff Sgt. David Bellavia, June 25, 2019.

Sgt. Bellavia was fighting in Operation Phantom Fury, in which more than 10,000 US troops took back Fallujah, Iraq, from more than 3,000 insurgents who were entrenched in the urban battlefield.

"David often tells young people, Americans don't want to fight".

"It's my privilege to award the highest military honor to an American soldier who demonstrated exceptional courage to protect his men and defend our nation", Trump said at the White House Tuesday.

The audience gave Bellavia a standing ovation after Trump presented him the Medal of Honor. Bellavia returned to Iraq as an embedded reporter in 2006 and 2008 where he covered the heavy fighting in Ramadi, Fallujah, and Diyala Province.

After leaving the military in August 2005, Bellavia co-founded Vets for Freedom, a veteran advocacy organization.

Rex Tillerson Says Jared Kushner Conducted Foreign Policy Without Him
Toward the end of the interview, a committee member asked Tillerson if he could describe Trump's value system to the panel. Kushner promised Tillerson he would "try to do better", but ultimately remained "in charge of his own agenda".

Bellavia and another soldier exchanged gunfire with the insurgent in the kitchen.

"You can be victimized by it, you can become prisoner of all of these things, or you could just say, look, what do I feel comfortable talking about?" They needed to be quickly evacuated so they could get treatment. "Let's talk about why this is ours", he said, according to WHAM-TV.

At the time, he was a second lieutenant and platoon leader of the 2nd Platoon, A Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Calvary Division (Airmobile).

In the middle of a pitched battle in Iraq came a request for help: Members of Staff Sergeant David Bellavia's platoon of soldiers were pinned down in a dark house under intense close-range machine-gun fire. One of them was in hand-to-hand combat.

The president presented the Medal of Honor to former Army Staff Sgt. David G. Bellavia, of NY.

Bellavia recalled in an Army oral history interview, "This is not a John Rambo moment".

Sgt. Bellavia's wife, Deanna King, expressed delight and gratitude to the law enforcement officers who gave their family a police escort into the District of Columbia on Monday as they arrived from NY with their three children.
