Trump’s ABC Interview Briefly Derailed by Mick Mulvaney Coughing in Oval Office

Trump says he didn’t fire Mueller because firings ‘didn’t work out too well’ for Nixon

He documented extensive contacts between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation, and said Russian Federation waged a hacking and influence campaign to help Trump defeat Clinton, but he did not establish that members of the campaign conspired with Moscow. But ABC News'George Stephanopoulos got it done.

President Donald Trump's much-hyped full interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos included what nearly seemed like an outtake: a line of questioning interrupted by someone coughing.

Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. was questioned by a Senate committee in a closed session on Wednesday about a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower in NY, in which a Russian lawyer offered damaging information on Hillary Clinton, the elder Trump's Democratic opponent in the 2016 presidential election.

Stephanopoulos asked, "Why would Don McGahn lie under oath?"

President Donald Trump said that he didn't fire special counsel Robert Mueller because firings "didn't work out too well" for former President Richard Nixon, though he claimed he had the Constitutional authority to do so. Trump kept dismissing this as mere "oppo research" that all candidates collect on opponents.

"Number one, I was never gonna fire Mueller", Trump insisted.

Stephanopoulos followed up: Did Trump really think such foreign "interference" was OK in American politics?

Trump replied: "Excuse me". I wasn't going to fire him. "It's a fantastic financial statement", Trump said, before saying "And let's do that over, he's coughing in the middle of my answer". He added: "The FBI director says that's what you have to do".

"The FBI director is wrong", Trump said firmly. Mueller's report stated that a middleman had emailed Don Jr. that the "Crown prosecutor of Russian Federation ...offered to provide the Trump Campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia" as "part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump". And all of that Kremlin-scented intrigue has nothing to do with what US politicos call oppo research. "Boy, oh boy", the president said. After detailing scores of contacts between Trump associates and Russia, Mueller concluded there was insufficient evidence that a conspiracy had occurred.

"You don't accept help from foreign governments, especially at a moment when America is reeling from the fact that our democracy was successfully attacked and interfered with in the last election by a hostile foreign power", he continued.

In a stunning interview clip with ABC News reporter George Stephanopoulos that was released on Wednesday, Trump said he'd take damaging information on a 2020 rival from a foreign country and wouldn't call the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "This reality is presenting a significant national security problem".
