China says both U.S. China should make compromises in trade talks

China hopes a meeting later this week between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will help build trust and resolve "outstanding issues", a foreign ministry spokesman said Tuesday.

President Donald Trump will meet an array of world leaders on the sidelines of this week's G20 summit in Japan, including China's Xi Jinping and Russia's Vladimir Putin, a USA official said Monday.

"The president [Trump] is anticipating meeting with President Putin at the G20", the official said on Monday.

Trump also plans to meet with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"He's comfortable we are in a strong position, tariffs we put in place", the official said.

It blamed the USA for abandoning the only route to peace just days after the two countries came within minutes of conflict. Sanctions against foreign minister Mohmmad Javad Zarif are expected later this week.

The meeting comes as the world's two largest economies step up their tariff skirmishes in an escalation of their long-running trade war, a development that has roiled financial markets and impacted global growth.

Last month, Trump more than doubled import tariffs on $200bn worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent.

The meeting in Osaka is the first opportunity for the two leaders to discuss the trade dispute face-to-face since Trump said he was ready to target the $300 billion in Chinese imports that he hasn't already hit with tariffs, extending them to everything China ships to the United States. That's in addition to Huawei, which was added to the list in May citing US national security concerns.

When asked if Trump was planning a visit to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on the border of North and South Korea, the official neither confirmed nor denied.
