Trump tweets may get slapped with Twitter's new warning label

Tweets affected by the new measure will remain on the site, but will not appear in searches or be recommended to users through any of Twitter's algorithmic channels. Any tweet from a politician or government official found to be in violation of Twitter's vague policy against "abusive" language will be targeted and then dropped behind a dialogue box which warns users of the content and then requires them to click through to view the offending tweet.

From now on, tweets that Twitter deems to involve matters of public interest, but which violate the service's rules, will be obscured by a warning explaining the violation and Twitter's reasons for publishing it anyway. Such tweets will also be de-prioritized in Twitter's algorithm, meaning fewer people will see them. Because of the president's outsize ability to start wars, move stock markets or influence other world events, Twitter should instead review leaders' tweets before they are sent out and block them if necessary, Grygiel said.

Twitter's "safety" team wrote in a blog post that when office-holders or candidates posted material that "violated our rules" in the past, it often chose to ignore the problem in the interest of poliical free speech. On the rare occasions when this happens, we'll place a notice - a screen you have to click or tap through before you see the Tweet - to provide additional context and clarity. Twitter maintains the right to delete tweets where a world leader issues "direct threats of violence or calls to commit violence against an individual" as those instances are "unlikely" to be in the public interest.

Trump has accused Twitter of "shadowbanning", or effectively blocking posts, from prominent conservative voices while promoting progressive viewpoints. Outcry over such actions forced Twitter in September 2017 to reveal a previously undisclosed "internal policy", which it said allowed it to factor "newsworthiness" into determinations of whether content violated its rules.

Footage from the scene showed the plane lying on its belly with the nose broken off. The regional government subsequently said the two killed were crew members.

U.S. President Donald Trump walks a fine line on Twitter, routinely posting comments that might get a lesser-known person suspended or locked out of their account for breaking the company's user guidelines. Twitter, for its part, has stressed its political neutrality.

The policy will only apply to government officials, those running for public office or people being considered for a government position. The forum, called "r/The_Donald", has long served as a highly trafficked and controversial gathering place for supporters of Trump and Republicans on Reddit, the United States' fifth-most-popular website. Since the 2016 election, Trump has amassed almost as many followers as those who voted for him nearly four years ago.

Twitter didn't mention Trump by name, but the company has repeatedly defended its decision to not suspend the president's account.
