Trump wants Turkey missile plans resolved without harming ties: Turkish presidency

Erdogan hails 'strategic partnership' with US

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed Saturday he was reassured by President Donald Trump that Washington would not impose sanctions on Ankara over its purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defense system.

In a statement following talks between Erdogan and Trump on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Japan, the Turkish presidency said Erdogan had voiced concerns about USA actions that may harm the strategic partnership between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

Trump's meeting with Erdogan followed the Turkish leader's discussions with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

"It's not good", Trump said.

He added, they have been working on a roadmap for a while which will be presented to both presidents during Trump's Turkey visit.

"Our related institutions have stated that the delivery would start within the first half of the month of July", Erdogan said.

Experts say sanctions would hit Ankara's already fragile economy hard.

Turkish officials have previously said they are preparing for United States sanctions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit. "The pursuit of the S-400 undermines that". The US finally approved the sale of the Patriot system to Turkey in December. "I believe it can not happen", Erdogan said.

Washington has said that if fellow North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Turkey does not cancel the S-400 deal by July 31, Ankara will be blocked from purchasing the next-generation F-35 fighter. "You understand that? You have to treat people fairly", the USA president said.

Relations between Turkey and the U.S. have been tense over multiple issues, including American support for a Kurdish militia in Syria and the failure to extradite a Pennsylvania-based Muslim preacher blamed for the 2016 failed coup.

The two leaders, who are in Osaka, Japan, met in the morning on the margins of the two-day G20 Summit and talked about the strong development partnership between India and Turkey.
