US gov't moves migrant kids after AP exposes bad treatment

Customs and Border Protection has come under fire in recent days amid revelations that almost 300 migrant children - from infants to 17-year-olds - had been detained in a remote Border Patrol station in West Texas without adequate food, water and sanitation.

The announcement comes days after CNN reported on a team of lawyers, doctors and advocates warning of what they called major health and hygiene problems at multiple US Customs and Border Protection facilities in Texas, including the one in Clint. Another administration official said Sanders' resignation was not tied to the recent allegations of neglect at a Border Patrol facility in Clint, Texas.

More than 100 migrant children have been returned to a Texas border station just a day after being moved out, a United States border official has confirmed.

But Clara Long, an attorney who interviewed children at Border Patrol Station 1 last week, said conditions were not necessarily better there.

That's how lawyer Holly Cooper described the conditions inside a Texas border station, where the children were being held without access to hygiene products and essential care.

John Sanders's resignation, announced on Tuesday, followed an outcry over the treatment of migrant children in one of the agency's facilities near the border with Mexico.

Independent inspectors allowed access to the center under a court-ordered agreement said the children weren't being properly cared for and denied basic sanitary conditions.

"The death of a child is always a bad thing, but here is a situation where, because there is not enough funding ... they can't move the people out of our custody", Sanders said.

The acting commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, John Sanders, is resigning and will leave his post on July 5, the agency said on Tuesday. As of last week, border facilities built to hold perhaps 4,000 people had 15,000 people in them.

As stories of substandard conditions in facilities have continued to emerge, some volunteers have tried to donate supplies - only to be turned away by border officials. Now, the agency is apprehending tens of thousands of parents and children weekly.

"They don't know where their loved ones are who they crossed the border with", she said.

There are mounting concerns for children at other facilities, with another group of lawyers claiming to have witnessed similar conditions at a Central Processing Centre in McAllen, Texas. "It's a health crisis. a manufactured health crisis", she said". Some of the children have been there for almost a month.

Most of the young detainees have not been able to shower or wash their clothes since they arrived at the facility, those who visited said.

"One of the combs was lost, and Border Patrol agents got so mad that they took away the children's blankets and mats".

In a statement, the border authority acknowledged that the Clint facility was not suited to the task.
