U.S. lawmakers threaten to subpoena Trump aide Conway

In a memo sent to the White House, the committee said it "will hold a hearing to examine the recommendation of the independent Office of Special Counsel (OSC) that President Trump remove Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway from federal service, as well as reports by OSC about Ms. Conway and other Trump Administration appointees".

"Well, it would be good if I really. had a quick tutorial on the Hatch Act, what it is and what it is not", Conway told "Fox and Friends" Monday morning.

Trump has said he would not fire 52-year-old Conway, a former political pollster who became Trump's campaign manager in 2016 and the first woman to oversee a winning US presidential campaign.

The Office of Special Counsel recommended earlier this month that Conway be fired for "repeatedly" violating the Hatch Act, which limits the political activities federal employees can engage in, and Special Counsel Henry Kerner will discuss this while testifying before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on Wednesday, The Daily Beast reports.

Kellyanne Conway during an interview outside the West Wing of the White House in March.

The law prevents all in the executive branch but the president and vice president from acting politically while acting in their official capacities, and accused Conway of repeated violations because of her criticisms of Democratic presidential candidates.

'They don't like the fact I'm so effective, ' the White House counselor said of Democrats and argued they 'want to chill free speech'.

3 World Series Contenders Nobody is Talking About
Despite being loaded on offense, the Cardinals have been inefficient in 2019 and rank near the bottom-10 in runs and home runs. Louis has title-winning pedigree and are loaded offensively, but thus far simply haven’t delivered consistent results.

"Blah, blah, blah", she said as one reporter recounted her violations. Last week, the Office of Special Counsel recommended she be fired over Hatch Act violations.

"I'm going to talk about people's records because I have the right to", Conway said, according to the Hill. 'They have tried to take away her speech and I think you're entitled to free speech in the country'.

'If you're trying to silence me through the Hatch Act, it's not going to work, ' she said.

If Conway does not testify at the hearing, the Committee plans to hold a business meeting to consider authorizing a subpoena for the White House advisor for "testimony in connection with her failure to comply with the Hatch Act and ethics laws", Cummings wrote in a letter to Committee members dated Friday. 'Let me know when the jail sentence starts'. But the law makes no exemptions for top White House staffers, and outgoing White House press secretary Sarah Sanders would often refrain from voicing political opinions from the briefing room podium by citing the Hatch Act, ostensibly suggesting the law applies to a senior aide like her.

The report cites comments Conway made during the Alabama Senate special election in December 2017, which the office found violated the Hatch Act in another report released a year ago.

Conway also accused the Democrat-led panel of trying to "silence" her for her role in helping Trump win the presidency.

The 1939 law prohibits executive branch employees from engaging in some political activities.
