FBI CDC Join Probe Into Mysterious Dominican Republic Deaths

On top of a sort of sudden-death syndrome at Dominican resorts - liquor consumed at hotel minibars is a primary suspect - the shooting of former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz Sunday night outside a Santo Domingo club has focused new attention on violence in his homeland.

The involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, alongside Dominican authorities, is the first sign officials are considering a common link.

Thousands of miles from home, Wallace became the first of four American tourists and one of two staying at the Hard Rock Hotel to die while vacationing at Dominican resorts and possibly partaking of minibar liquor.

What's even weirder? Several of the deaths have occurred at the same resort. Concerns have been raised about cleaning chemicals used in rooms and possible exposure to organophosphates - found in fertiliser - via air conditioning systems at resorts.

Holmes, 63, and Day, 49, were found on May 30 by an employee of the Bahia Principe Hotel in La Romana who went to their room after they failed to check out, according to reports.

On April 14 this year, 67-year-old Robert Wallace also died in the area after having a drink from his minibar, his niece Chloe Arnold told Fox News.

At the same Hard Rock resort past year, another American man died under similar circumstances, the man's wife said.

Another woman who stayed at the Bahia Principe this week claimed that she "vomited blood" after drinking a 7-UP from her minibar.

At the same hotel last July another American tourist, 45-year-old David Harrison, of Maryland, died under similar circumstances.

The relatives of Robert Bell Wallace told Fox News on Sunday they made a decision to share the story of his death at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino resort in light of the recent deaths of American tourists on the Caribbean island.

'He and his wife arrived there at around midnight on April 10. "On April 11 he had scotch from the minibar".

The FBI is investigating the three most recent deaths.

The Dominican Republic is apparently a unsafe place to be from or visit. The autopsy cited heart attack, respiratory failure, and a fluid accumulation in her lungs as the cause of death.

Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41, and husband Dan Werner checked in to the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville on May 25 to celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary.

Arnold said that authorities have not yet given the family a cause of death.

Awilda initially thought it was an accident, but she now thinks she may have been spiked, following the deaths of three people at the resort last month.
