Telstra is now working to fix issues that are affecting EFTPOS services around the country this afternoon.
It's taken hours but telco giant Telstra has managed to put most bank and retail customers caught out at ATMs and checkouts back online after an outage. "We're sorry for the impact and inconvenience caused", a Telstra spokesperson said.
A Westpac spokesperson told Business Insider Australia that the bank is also facing outages of its ATM and Eftpos services, saying the issue is known to be affecting the Sydney metropolitan area, particularly the central business district. A spate of other online services have also been affected, ranging from ANZ banking to XBox Live.
Commonwealth Bank had issues with some of its merchant payment terminals which left some retailers unable to accept card payments during the outage.
Westpac and its subsidiary St George have tweeted that some branches, ATMS and services in Sydney are not working and it is working with external providers to restore services. We'll keep you updated as we know more. It's affecting some of our services. There is no need to call us if you are experiencing problems with these services.
"Due to this issue, we are experiencing higher than normal calls into our call centre".

The spokesperson also said the cause of the problem is not internal but due to "one of [its] telecommunication providers".
Most customer services have now been restored, and we're working with our customers on the remaining few.
Commonwealth has released a statement on social media, informers customers that they are aware that their machines are flopping and they're doing their best to resolve the issue.
The outage is affecting national retailers such as Woolworths, which is unable to process EFTPOS payments at many of its stores.
"Our stores are continuing to trade as our teams are still able to process payments manually at this time". "We're working closely with Telstra to rectify the issue as quickly as possible".
