Julian Alaphilippe reclaimed the Tour de France's yellow jersey in St-Étienne as his fellow Frenchman Thibaut Pinot underlined his title credentials in Saturday's eighth stage.

After seizing control of this year's Tour de France with his late attack on La Planche des Belles Filles on Thursday, Geraint Thomas very almost lost it on Saturday.

The French duo went full gas in the descent into St-Étienne and held off a trimmed peloton at the finish.

Thomas De Gendt soloed to victory on stage eight of the Tour de France in Saint Etienne as Julian Alaphilippe regained the yellow jersey and Geraint Thomas survived a dramatic crash which snapped team-mate Gianni Moscon's bike in half.

Alaphilippe and compatriot Thibaut Pinot staged a late attack, but failed to overturn their deficit from De Gendt, both finishing six seconds behind.

The brutal attack was left unanswered and Alaphilippe went over the mountain in second position behind De Gendt, claiming five precious bonus seconds.

Prime Minister Theresa May was among the famous faces watching the action with the duchesses from the royal box on Saturday. It's the second time the Duchess of Cambridge has worn this particular dress, the first was for a visit to Canada in 2016.

"It was a fantastic finale, it was handsome to go together like this and we showed that we can work together even if we're in different teams", said Alaphilippe, whose move was highly expected as bonus seconds were up for grabs in the ascent to the Cote de la Jaillere and at the finish.

With bonus seconds at play at the summit of the final categorized climb, the Cote de la Jaillere, Alaphilippe surged from a small pack of favourites near the top, with Pinot on his wheel. De Gendt, a noted breakaway specialist, delivered his second career Tour stage win in some style.

Once back in the pack, the Welshman, who is two seconds behind Kiwi George Bennett, did not move when Alaphilippe and Pinot went away. "It was a key moment in the race". This time, he said he was taken out by Michael Woods when the Canadian rider crashed going around a right-hand bend.

"I was trying to catch my bike because one policeman took my bike away so it was very hard to get back on the bike". "It's annoying and frustrating but to come back like I did is good".

De Gendt rode away immediately after the 200km stage from Macon kicked off alongside three other riders, and was the last survivor of the leading quartet not to be caught by the peleton. If I hadn't have crashed I could have followed, and it's a totally different story today.

Starting from Saint-Etienne, Sunday's ninth stage will cover 170.5km en route to Brioude.
