China slaps ban on meat imported from Canada

A Canadian citizen has been detained in Yantai, a city in northeastern China, Global Affairs Canada said on Saturday. After quoting a spokesman for the Global Affairs Canada, CNN reported that Canadian officials are providing consular assistance to the man who has been arrested.

Family between China and Canada chilled in December when Meng Wanzhou, the executive financial officer of Chinese tech extensive Huawei, was as soon as arrested in Vancouver on a US arrest warrant. She is now awaiting trial.

A source familiar with the latest detention told AFP there was no indication that the case was related to the arrests of Canadians Michael Kovrig, an ex-diplomat, and consultant Michael Spavor, who face espionage-linked accusations. Meng, the daughter of Huawei's founder, is now under house arrest in Vancouver.

It remains unclear if this latest detention was related to the arrest last week of 19 people in a drug case centring on the local branch of a language school in Xuzhou, a city south-west of Yantai.

Rain could linger in Arkansas and western Tennessee through Tuesday, where 6 to 10 inches of rain could fall and trigger flooding. KTBS-tv said the National Guard had to halt its initial rescue mission because the water was too high to safely reach the family.

The Canadian government has called the charges against them "arbitrary", fueling speculation that they were detained in retaliation for Meng's arrest.

China also sentenced yet any other Canadian to death for drug smuggling and suspended imports of Canadian meat merchandise.

The British embassy in Beijing on Friday said four of its nationals had been arrested in Jiangsu province where Xuzhou is located, without specifying if the arrests were related to the drug case.

Police did not say where the teachers worked, but the Education First language school expressed regret for a drug-related incident. The college said it would also no longer verify the nationalities of those facing alleged drug offences.
