Arsenal want another centre-back despite sealing £27m Saliba

Tottenham Slap In Better Bid Than Arsenal For William Saliba, Spurs Trying To Hijack Deal

Arsenal's potential signing of William Saliba is in doubt, with reports claiming that Spurs are trying to muscle their way in on a deal.

Saint-Etienne officials are expected to discuss the deal over the weekend.

The main obstacle for Arsenal would be Champions League football, both Juve and Spurs can offer that, we cannot and if all three clubs were to meet his personal demands then lack of participation in Europe's premier competition would put us at a severe disadvantage.

The Gunners were set to secure a 30m euro (£27m) deal for the 18-year-old that was to see him loaned back to the Ligue 1 club next season.

Arsenal's correspondent for Goal, Charles Watts, added: "Reports from France that Spurs have come in and bid beyond what Saint-Etienne wanted for Saliba".

Greg Clark: no-deal Brexit would destroy 'thousands' of jobs
The programme was scheduled for Tuesday, but a spokeswoman said the BBC had not been able to "reach agreement" with Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson.

A deal between Arsenal and the French side had been agreed in principle, but they still needed to thrash out the term of how bonuses would be structured and paid.

Arsenal have so far only signed Gabriel Martinelli this summer and the Gunners are thought to be keen on bringing in a number of new players before the new campaign.

And it would only rub salt into the wounds if Saliba chose their dearest rivals Spurs over them.

Besides raining on Arsenal's parade, Toby Alderweireld's future has also prompted the Lillywhites to make a move on Saliba. The Belgian centre-back's contract is due to expire at the end of next season, and he has a release clause of £25m which could see him leave the club this summer. So, should they be spending more than €30m on a teenage defender who will go back out on loan?
