Griezmann edges closer to Barcelona switch

French superstar Antoine Griezmann has officially joined Barcelona from Atletico Madrid after the Catalan club reportedly paid his €120 million release clause, which equates to just under $135 million.

Atletico Madrid said in a news release that the club believes "it is obvious that the agreement between the player and Barcelona was completed before the date of the buyout clause's reduction from €200 to €120m".

Atletico Madrid confirmed on Friday immediately after Barcelona's official announcement of the transfer that they would be legally contesting the financial compensation, arguing that Barcelona owes them a whopping $225 million instead.

The 28-year-old World Cup victor has signed a five-year deal which includes an 800m euro (£717m) release clause.

"Atletico Madrid believe the termination of the contract happened before the end of last season due to facts, deeds and actions by the player, and therefore have already initiated the procedures deemed appropriate to protect our rights and lawful interests". The club posted Griezmann's photo wearing Barcelona's traditional home jersey as well.

Jets' Chris Herndon suspended for first four games of the season
He immediately formed a connection with fellow rookie Darnold and the two showed a nice chemistry throughout last season. The Jets took the 23-year-old tight end as a fourth-round pick in the 2018 National Football League draft.

Atletico, who finished second last season in La Liga - nine points behind Barcelona, have now seen their third high profile departure this window.

The forward is then likely to finalise a move to Barca in the coming hours, with reports in Catalonia suggesting he will be presented at Camp Nou as early as Sunday. Finally, our paths cross. I'll defend the Barça shirt with pride and determination.

In saying that, Griezmann talked about how excited he was to start a new adventure.

After signing from fellow La Liga outfit Real Sociedad for £24m in July 2014 Griezmann went on to score 25 goals in his debut season, also claiming a Spanish Super Cup winners' medal.
