British Airways suspends Cairo flights as security precaution

According to the British Airways website, the next available flight to Cairo runs on Tuesday, July 30 - meaning the suspension will last 10 days.

Egypt's civil aviation ministry said it was "coordinating" with the British embassy in Cairo and the local BA representative and starting an extra EgyptAir flight to London every day to carry stranded passengers. It stated that this is a precautionary measure.

Lufthansa followed a few hours later and confirmed that it has cancelled flights to Cairo as well.

British Airways suspended flights to the Egyptian capital of Cairo for one week over unspecified security concerns. One service from Frankfurt is operated by Airbus A330-300 aircraft, the other ones by the smaller Airbus A321.

The airline added that it would never operate an aircraft unless it was safe to do so.

Three Egyptian airport security sources told Reuters that British staff were checking security at Cairo airport on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Human Rights Foundation among others has asked for performers not to go there on account of the gender segregation policies. That's a stark change from when Saudi morality police would raid establishments that played loud music.

The Foreign Office has not issued warnings against air travel to and from Cairo, but has advised against all non-essential travel to the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Some affected passengers used social media to share pictures which appeared to show a letter handed out by British Airways with a similar message about security. They gave no further details.

The airline has not specified or given any more information on what the security issue is.

Other airlines that use the airport are now operating as normal. The agency said an estimated 415,000 British nationals visited Egypt in 2018 and that most visits were "trouble free".

The airline was also among several major carriers to announce in June they would reroute flights to avoid the Strait of Hormuz.

Following the bomb explosion that destroyed a Russian airliner over Egypt's Sinai peninsula in October 2015 after it had departed Sharm El Sheikh airport, the United Kingdom was one of a number of countries to temporarily suspend flights to and from the country.
