He must also pay $480,000 in fines. "We all have choices", Moore said.

"Mr. Fields, you had choices". "It was not a spur of the moment action".

Fields, 22, was convicted of the murder of Heather Heyer in December.

Statements by several victims were also read in court.

Constance Young is an African-American woman who was injured in the attack.

"Hello, scum", said Jeanne "Star" Peterson, as she addressed Fields, seated about 20 feet from her at a table with his lawyers. "You look like a coward now that you're not behind the wheel of a auto".

Fields, sentenced to life in prison on federal hate crime charges for slamming his auto into anti-racism protesters during a white nationalist rally in Virginia is set to be sentenced on state murder and wounding charges. Fields has been described in reports as an avowed neo-Nazi.

"I apologize to my mother for putting her through all of this".

Susan Bro, Heyer's mother, said she hopes Fields never sees the light of day outside a prison again.

"I feel like he's at least in the hands of justice, and I can continue to move forward with the Heather Heyer Foundation".

Fields, wearing a gray and white prison suit, twiddled his thumbs during the victim statements.

Fields was sentenced to life in prison for his federal charges last month.

Unite the Right, which was organised to oppose Charlottesville's decision to remove a Confederate statue, was the largest white nationalist rally in the United States in recent years.

Evidence showed that Fields, who drove alone to the rally from his apartment in Maumee, Ohio, had always been fascinated by Nazi Germany, espousing admiration for the militarism and racial purity doctrine of the Third Reich. Trump was strongly criticized by fellow Republicans and Democrats for saying after Charlottesville that "both sides" were to blame for the violence.

In federal court last month, Fields was sentenced to 29 life terms, 27 of which were made concurrent with his state sentence.

Fields' guilty plea in June on 29 of 30 federal hate crime charges was made to avoid the death penalty for murdering Heyer and injuring more than 30 others when he intentionally mowed them down with his auto on a one-way street on August 12, 2017.

Prosecutors at his federal sentencing showed jailhouse phone calls from 2018 in which he called Heyer "anti-white, liberal".

FBI Special Agent Wade Douthit read grand jury testimony from one of Fields' high school classmates who said he appeared happy when touring the Dachau camp and remarked, "This is where the magic happened".
