Charming Charlie closing all 261 stores, including Monroe location

The jewelry and fashion accessory chain said Thursday it will close all of its 261 stores nationwide as part of its bankruptcy proceedings, USA Today reported.

Privately-held Charming Charlie, which had stores and operations in 38 states, shuttered about 100 stores during its prior bout in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which began in December 2017 and lasted until April 2018.

As of Thursday, the store's website is unable to take orders. The company employs more than 3,300 people, including 856 full-time employees, Chief Financial Officer Alvaro E. Bellon said in a court declaration.

Charming Charlie asked the bankruptcy court to allow it to honor $19 million of outstanding gift cards for 30 days. Coresight Research's weekly tracker on retail openings and closings in the us says 7,062 stores have closed so far in 2019, while 5,864 stores closed in all of 2018. It also faulted the impact of trade tariffs for reduced consumer spending, as well as poor weather earlier in the year for keeping would-be shoppers at home. Toys R Us, facing tough competition from Amazon and several billions of dollars of debt, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in September of 2017 and liquidated its businesses previous year.
