Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu a target for RB Leipzig

The Wales worldwide Ethan Ampadu is close to continuing his development at RB Leipzig next season with Chelsea negotiating his departure on a season-long loan to the Bundesliga club.

Ampadu was given a smattering of first-team appearances by Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri last season, but Frank Lampard has arrived at the club and chose to send him out on loan to help him take the next step in his career.

And newly-appointed Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has confirmed he wants to send Ampadu out on loan, in a bid to help him get regular playing time and continue his development.

Ampadu, who has eight senior caps, underwent a medical in Germany on Friday having been omitted from the Chelsea senior squad who are now in Japan on a two-game pre-season tour.

The Wales global, 18, stayed behind from Chelsea's pre-season tour in Japan to sort out a deal.

And Ampadu can give him options at centre-back and defensive-midfield.

'I tried to sign Ethan on loan at Derby last year, so I'm a big fan, but with the minutes he played last year, I have to think of the bigger picture and the interests of Ethan and of Chelsea, ' Lampard said.

Lampard confirmed this week that he tried to bring Ampadu to Derby County last season and he believes the Wales worldwide will benefit from regular first-team matches.
