Congress Delays Robert Mueller Hearings One Week Amid Dispute Over Questions

House considering a delay of Robert Mueller’s testimony

Former special counsel Robert Mueller's highly anticipated testimony on Capitol Hill next week may be delayed by a week amid negotiations on the length of his hearings before two House panels, according to multiple reports.

Under the previous agreement, Mueller would appear for two hours each before the Judiciary and Intelligence committees.

However, the source said that the final plans and format for Mueller's testimony are still not set in stone and could change. House Democrats hope that he will be able to provide details during the private session that Mueller would not be able to share during his scheduled public hearing. A more ideal situation would be for the questioning to be handled, or largely handled by the staff attorneys for the committees, who are generally speaking more skilled at questioning under these circumstances than individual members.

"This report is my testimony", Mueller had said.

In April, Mueller submitted the findings of his almost two-year investigation to the Justice Department. CNN reported on Thursday that the committee had met with David Archey, a senior Federal Bureau of Investigation official on Mueller's team, in closed session.

Democrats said they chose to delay at the request of Mr. Mueller, but the new agreement also appeared to be meant to give lawmakers from both parties more time to question the former special counsel in public on his findings.

Reports state that two hours had been allotted for the Judiciary Committee and the Intelligence Committee to question Mueller about the contents of his 448-page report regarding so-called "Russian interference" during the 2016 election. "Sources said Friday morning the hearings will be pushed back to July 24. They want to go to it again and again and again because they want to hurt the president before the election".

Democrats have also privately-and publicly-stated concerns about some members being excluded from questioning Mueller due to time constraints.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, a senior member of the panel, said the frustration among the junior members of the committee wasn't about bruised egos.

The questions surrounding the hearing threatened to distract from the Democrats' intended objective: highlighting the contents of Mueller's 448-page report for Americans who they believe have not read it. The committee is comprised of 24 Democratic members and 17 Republican members. And those on the Judiciary Committee who weren't in line to get questions were up in arms they might not get their shot to question Mueller with millions tuning in. At 12:00 p.m. EDT the House Intelligence Committee will begin its hearing.
