The man, who has not been identified, walked towards the aircraft on the runway and was spotted by the pilot, who slowed down and later turned off the engine as the man continued to wander around the aircraft, Azman Air said in a statement.

A video of the incident taken from inside the plane shows the man climbing on the wing as passengers cry out in disbelief.

"At about 1009 hours, aviation security officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria arrested an intruder who was sighted trying to climb into an Azman aircraft waiting for clearance from Air Traffic Controllers", she said. The pilot radioed the tarmac to report the incident, according to the airline.

An official of the airline who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity said the incident lasted for about 30 minutes before the Aviation Security (AVSEC) came to apprehend the man whose mission was not yet known. The aircraft eventually departed for Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Other affected officers have also been replaced.
