Former Delhi Cheif Minister Sheila Dikshit passes away at 81

The announcement was made by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who said, "Delhi government has chose to declare two-day state mourning over the demise of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit".

Dikshit was hospitalised in the national capital. She had also been Kerala Governor briefly in 2014. During my school and college, the green cover of Delhi actually grew by 300%! Despite many leaders differing from her, she did not give in to them. Though she managed to keep the BJP at bay for almost a decade and a half, the rise of the Aam Aadmi Party - that rode the tide of an anti-corruption movement - ultimately dislodged her.

Her largely glorious legacy in Delhi was, however, marred by the CWG scam as the BJP accused her of large-scale corruption in several development contracts approved to meet the 2010 Commonwealth Games deadlines. "Deeply saddened by the news of Sheila Dikshitji passing away. Condolences to her family and associates". She represented New Delhi constituency in Delhi Vidhan Sabha. "Only last month I had met her for almost an hour when she came with her party's delegation to submit a memorandum on several issues, at the end of the meeting I wished her good health, not knowing that this would be my last meeting with her". On Friday, she was detained by the Mirzapur administration when she insisted on travelling to the scene of the recent shooting in Sonbhadra.

The former Delhi CM was appointed as the president of the Congress Delhi Unit ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

This came after various pages on Facebook spread rumours that Ms Dikshit was admitted to a hospital, a day before polls in the national capital.

World Bank 'Drops' $300 Million Amaravati Project
The official said the worldwide organisation's board of directors was informed that the project was no longer under preparation. The project was to be co-financed by another multilateral funding agency Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

Despite her age and health issues, she was always open to people, rival politicians as well as journalists. "But we always admired her behaviour and efficiency at work", he said.

Dikshit stepped in to assist her father-in-law and was noticed by Indira Gandhi, who nominated her first as a member of the Indian delegation to the UN Commission on the status of women.

It was also the warmth she exuded that made even her political opponents pay personal visits to her. "Heartfelt condolences to her family", he wrote. It was this bond which allowed her to continue in the post of chief minister of Delhi for so long. She repeated the feat in 2003 though with lesser number of seats and again won in 2008.

According to sources, Dikshit had been undergoing treatment at Fortis Escorts hospital under the supervision of Dr. Seth for the past few years. She was being treated for a heart ailment in Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. "She was put on the ventilator and at 3:55 pm she passed away peacefully".

She is survived by a son, Sandeep, and daughter, Latika.
