Golf Roundup: McIlroy shoots 62, leads Koepka by stroke in Memphis

Can Mc Ilroy bounce back from last weeks' Open disappointment on Sunday

Rory McIlroy grabbed a one-shot lead over Brooks Koepka in the third round at the WGC-St.

He leads by one shot from US PGA victor Brooks Koepka (64), who finished fourth in the Open. "But Rory is playing well and I know I'm going to have to play well tomorrow to beat him".

"I just dialled my distances in today with the wedges".

McIlroy, who sealed his third successive birdie on the 18th with a 27-foot putt, said: "I've holed a lot of putts this week, which is nice". He had a 12-under 198 total.

It means the 30-year-old will enjoy a a first-ever Sunday pairing with fellow four-time major victor Koepka in the last group for the final round.

The Northern Irishman made five birdies on the front nine, including three straight beginning at the seventh in Memphis, Tennessee.

The duo played together during the opening two rounds and they will be the final pairing on Sunday, something they are both looking forward to.

Round 2 leader Matthew Fitzpatrick struggled through a rollercoaster round of 69 that included three birdies and one bogey on the front, followed by two more bogeys and one double on the back.

2 riders kicked out of Tour de France after altercation
Martin's actions nearly forced Rowe off the road, infuriating the Welsh cyclist who retaliated by shoving the German in the face. Cyclists Luke Rowe and Tony Martin have protested their disqualification from the Tour de France for "acts of violence".

Spaniard Jon Rahm, Australian Marc Leishman and Swede Alex Noren are three shots behind, certainly not out of it even though all eyes will be on the two frontrunners.

"It is exciting, " McIlroy said. He's the man right now. I got to play with him the last couple days and I enjoyed it.

Koepka says Sunday should be fun duking it out with McIlroy with so much on the line. "Rory's playing some good golf, especially with the start he got off to", he said.

On Saturday, the field featuring 46 of the world's top 50 attacked a course in nearly ideal condition for scoring.

McIlroy also shot 67, despite some loose iron play.

"I've putted really good last week and this week". He had a nine-birdie, one-bogey round to move from a tie for 17th to the top of the leaderboard at TPC Southwind. His lone bogey came at the par-4 12th. He chipped out to 6 feet to salvage bogey.

He rolled in a 16-footer on 17, setting up for his longest birdie putt on the final hole. I was hitting the ball pin high all day. He had just one to be precise, a three-footer at the par-five 16th that he duly sank. He recovered with birdies on two of his final three holes in the final group with Patrick Cantlay. "So that's completely understandable".

McIlroy carded three closing birdies to post a 62.
