Hackers take over the London Metropolitan Police's Twitter

Other tweets seemed to take aim at individuals, with one reading: 'We are the police...

A Met spokesman said the force was working to establish exactly what happened. "Cal and Dylan are gay btw", read another, apparently referring to Netflix show Tidelands.

A series of the tweets called for the release of drill rap artist Digga D.

Scotland Yard's principal Twitter account, which is followed by more than 1.2 million people and is used to provide important alerts in times of crisis, tweeted a series of freaky messages on Friday night after becoming "subject to unauthorised access".

Some of the posts received hundreds of likes and retweets.

In the early hours of Saturday, after apparently regaining control of its output, Scotland Yard said it believed the "security issue" related exclusively to the external service the Met's press bureau uses to issue news releases.

This newspaper learnt that airport authorities have since brought the situation under control. The pilot radioed the tarmac to report the incident, according to the airline.

Hackers posted incoherent tweets linked to a surprisingly well-written but phony press release, as they called for the release of the 18-year old singer.

Scotland Yard confirmed that its website had "been subject to unauthorised access".

But the police force later denied there had been any "hack" of its IT infrastructure after the series of weird tweets were posted.

BBC home affairs producer Daniel De Simone tweeted that the hack was a "serious issue" and added: "The press and public relies on comms from the Met during emergencies such as terror attacks".

A force spokesman said: "This system has no affiliation with the Force's crime management or command and control systems and has not compromised the Force's operational capabilities".

"We have begun making changes to our access arrangements to MyNewsDesk", the Met said in a statement.
