The Hollywood Reporter brings word that former One Direction member Harry Styles is the latest to be enlisted for Disney's live-action Little Mermaid.

He'd star opposite Halle Bailey as Ariel. Production is expected to start early next year. Styles had a bulk of the lines in the otherwise dialogue-light film, which also starred Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy and Fionn Whitehead.

The former One Direction singer is said to be an early favourite and is now in discussions with the studio.

Styles recently screen-tested for the role of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's upcoming biopic, but the singer lost out on the role to Austin Butler.

He said this would take some time and it did not seem realistic that these reports would be ready before the end of July. Mr Justice McDermott said he was seeking "professional assistance" in a case he described as "very difficult".

Disney's animated The Little Mermaid made over $211 million at the box office and became a bestseller on home video, popularizing songs like "Under The Sea" and "Part of Your World".

Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play the villainoius Ursula, while Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are nearing deals to play Ariel's friends, a fish named Flounder and a seagull named Scuttle, respectively.

"The Little Mermaid" will be directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee. Miranda previously worked with Disney on 2016's Moana, which he fully composed.
