Excessive heat watch begins Friday with heat index over 110 degrees

Excessive heat watch begins Friday with heat index over 110 degrees

Hot temperatures combined with high humidity are expected to create risky conditions, with the worst expected Saturday and Sunday. This heat dome is sprawled over the eastern half of the nation, resulting in oppressive heat and humidity from the Central Plains to the Northeast. "This heat, combined that with high humidity, mean heat index values well above 100 °F!"

More than 200 million Americans in parts of the central and eastern USA will experience temperature indexes of over 100F as a heat wave is expected to slam at least 29 states over the weekend.

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect from noon Friday until 8 p.m. Sunday, July 21. Meanwhile, emergency rooms are on alert, bracing for an influx of heat-related emergencies. Make sure you're drinking liquids even when you don't feel like you need it, especially if you're sweating. Avoid alcoholic beverages and liquids high in sugar or caffeine.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.

Cities are opening cool-down points and extending recreation center hours to deal with the heat. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going into the sun.

The National Weather Service urged the public to stay safe in the sweltering conditions.

The health unit also warns that while everyone is at risk, the elderly, infants and preschool-aged children, people with chronic illnesses or certain medication and people participating in physical or strenuous outdoor activity for a prolonged period are at greater risk of being affected. Rest periodically so your body's thermostat has a chance to recover.

The series is also headed to San Diego Comic-Con with a panel at 2:15 PM on July 19 in Hall H. Sadly there was no word on a trailer for the new series.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

"Animals can die from heatstroke within 15 minutes when they're in the auto so it's very quick when this happens, the same thing for children", Travis said.

-Check on neighbors and monitor those at high risk.

Conditions are particularly risky for children, the elderly, and those who work outdoors. Signs of heat exhaustion include cold, clammy skin; a fast, weak pulse; vomiting; weakness and fainting. Severe dehydration can become life-threatening if not treated.

With a heat wave set to send temperatures to historic highs across much of the us this weekend, Centre County residents should also plan for soaring temperatures. By the time this heat wave ends Monday, the count of 90-degree days should close in on the top five most year-to-date. Continued exposure may lead to heat stroke, which is life threatening.

Dangerously high temperatures and humidity could quickly cause heat stress or heat stroke to those outside or without access to air conditioning. Sweating has usually stopped and your body temperature becomes too high. You should call 911 and seek immediate medical attention.
