Hunger on the rise worldwide as 821 million affected, says UN

There are now more obese people in the world than hungry ones

A recent United Nations (UN) report highlighted that an estimated 820 million people did not have enough to eat in 2018.

The report, titled State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019, said that after almost a decade of progress, the number of people suffering from hunger had slowly increased in the past three years.

"In the Indian Himalayas, economic slowdown coupled with natural resource depletion and climate change negatively impacted on food production and employment opportunities".

He said trends indicate that the numbers of overweight and obese people in Africa and Asia would soon exceed those who are hungry.

"We have to rescue, on average, over 3.5 million people from hunger every year from now until 2030 if we want to reach the zero hunger goal of the Sustainable Development Goal 2", he added.

I would not back US military action against Iran
Hunt said that the comments were "totally offensive". "I don't think they are looking to do any kind of war, I really don't". However, the UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt also warns that the USA and Iran risk triggering an "accidental war".

The report was produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN Children's Fund (Unicef), the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Food Program. "Without food security we will never have peace and stability", said Beasley, deploring the fact that the media carry more talk about Brexit and U.S. President Donald Trump than about children dying of hunger. "In every continent, the prevalence of food insecurity is slightly higher among women than men, with the largest differences found in Latin America", according to the United Nations report. The number of Indian children under five years who were overweight was 2.4 million last year, while 46 million were stunted, according to the report. It has increased in all regions, particularly among school-age children and adults, and today there are more obese people than hungry people in the world.

Malnutrition remains widespread in Africa, where around 20 percent of the population is affected, and in Asia where more than 12 percent of people experience it.

This year's edition of the report takes a broader look at the impact of food insecurity - beyond hunger.

In a state of moderate food insecurity, people face uncertainties in terms of access to food, availability of food and, in some cases, they are forced to reduce quantity of food consumed and compromise on quality. In order to tackle this situation, it is critical to implement and strengthen economic and social policies to counteract the effects of adverse economic cycles, while avoiding cuts in essential services. People need financial incentives to buy healthy food, such as the implementation of taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages or on foods high in salt, sugar and fat; as well as the provision of coupons for vulnerable groups to buy fresh produce in markets.

"Slow Food gardens are not only additional sources of food for communities, but also educational and cultural tools for all those involved", pointed out Mukiibi. It is equally important to promote media campaigns to stimulate healthier food options, to restrict marketing of unhealthy food to children, and to make nutrition education mandatory in schools. It seems incredible that in 2019 Homo sapiens is still struggling with the fight against hunger, and even more incredible to see that we are losing!
