While players like John Mikel Obi and Striker, Odion Ighalo did not return with the team back to Nigeria, Ahmed Musa led the rest of the team back to the country.

Sharing a photo of himself in the national jersey, Mikel Obi wrote: "Egypt is a country where I started and have finished my national career".

"He has been very strong for us".

"In 2006 I played my first official championship for my Country".

Speaking moments after the 32-year-old Mikel announced he was retiring from national team duties, Rohr, who guided Nigeria to a third place finish at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, insists the position is open for youngsters playing regularly for their clubs. "And it is sad that he wants not to continue", the Super Eagles coach said, as per ESPN.

"But the door always is open for him any time".

The former Chelsea and Middlesbrough midfielder made the announcement on Thursday afternoon after leading the Nigerian team to a bronze medal finish at the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

The 32-year old made his debut appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations thirteen years ago in Egypt.
